Do It (Heh) Yourself Dental Dam! Part 1!

Welcome to DIY Sex Ed with Mama Elliott! Tonight, we’ll be making our dental dams out of condoms! Here’s what you’ll need!: 

• Clean hands
• A pair of clean, sharp scissors 
• A condom (preferably unlubed. Lubed ones don’t have the most pleasant taste!) 

Step One: Wash your hands. It’s important to make sure you don’t get anything you wouldn’t want inside your sexy parts on your dam. Sugars, left behind by foods or hand creams, can lead to yeast or urinary tract infections. Use a plain, unscented soap. Avoid sanitizers, they can upset the natural bacteria balance of vagina or cause skin irritation in all kinds of delicate sexy bits. 

Step Two: Take a look at your condom! 

As always, when using a condom, there are a couple things you should check:

• Make sure it’s not past is expiry, if it is throw it away
• Check to make sure there are no punctures or holes in the packet, if there are throw it away
• If you can’t tell if it has any holes in it, squeeze it. If it feels “fresh” (ie: like it’s got a little bit on air in it), it’s airtight and hasn’t been punctured! 

Step Three: Open the condom up along the side of the packet. 

We tear along the side to make sure we don’t tear the condom too! 

Step Four: We take the condom out of the packet! Can’t tell which way is the right way? Here’s an easy way to remember: Make sure it’s facing the right way up, with the bottom curling upwards like a sombrero, not down wards like a toque!

Not down like a toque! 

Step Five: Cut the tip of the condom off! 

Just the very tip will suffice! Make sure to use your scissors carefully, so you don’t poke any unwanted holes in your dam! 

Step Six: With the condom still rolled up, cut along the side. Make sure your cut is clean and you don’t poke any unwanted holes! 

when you’re finished, you’ll have something like this 

Step Seven: Unroll your dam! 

Ta da! Now you have a ready-to-use dental dam! This clean, safe and fun little barrier will lower your risk of sexually transmitted infections, especially those caused by open sores or stomach infections like hepatitis A. It’s also good to use if you’re not fond of the flavour of sexy parts, or you’re not interested in getting fecal matter in your mouth. It’s great for oral sex involving sexy holes— analingus or cunalingus, pick your poison! 

Here are some other tips for using a dental dam!:

• Make sure not to get your sides mixed up! In the heat of the moment, it can be easy to drop your barrier and get mixed up! If you accidentally switch sides, you can expose yourself to whatever you’re trying to protect yourself from! To keep this from happening, make a little mark in the corner with a non-toxic pen! I usually make a little “L” shape— that way, it’s easy to tell when it’s backwards! 
• Make these dams in advance! Don’t kill the moment with an craft project, and being prepared is very sexy! Keep pre-made dams in individual zip lock bags, in a dry, room temperature place. Remember! They don’t last forever! Write the date of when you made each dam on the bag, and if looks anything less than fresh, throw it away. 
• Dental dams, like condoms, are one time use only! Don’t use the same dam twice, even with the same partner! After you play, throw it away!
